If you’re a small to medium business and have been thinking about connectivity and are serious about doing business in a digitally connected and online world, then relying on a consumer grade broadband connection is simply not good enough.
Even if you have super-fast fibre broadband, it’s more likely that it’s going to be a contended and an asynchronous link, where your connection is shared amongst other local users and download speeds are higher than upload speeds. This simply won’t do – you can’t run a business with a service that’s designed for domestic use, unless you opt to get a professional service with committed service levels .
I have compiled a selection of professional connectivity providers (UK focussed) who can provide you with a range of different solutions. It’s going to cost you significantly more, most likely the price of a small car – but consider this – is connectivity as important to your business as electricity and water? If so, then you need proper business grade connectivity.
Most of these claim to have differentiators in terms of service and some do – some may be optimised for high frequency traffic – e.g. if you’re a trader, others maybe optimised for transporting video. Do check them out.
So in no particular order…

The latest update of the Synology DSM operating system software launches an integrated Cloud Sync application which can be downloaded from the Synology App store. It combines all of your favourite Cloud Storage providers into a single portal. Some such as Amazon S3, Amazon Glacier and Dropbox were there before, however these are now joined by Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, Baidu Cloud and the much eagerly awaited Box.com integration.
It may have been available on an earlier release but I discovered it on Synology DSM 5.1– 5004 Update 2.
The Synology Cloud Sync application can be downloaded from the Package Centre and when installed it gives you the option to select which Cloud Storage Service provider you want to sync your Synology with.
Once installed the application will appear in the Main Menu in DSM. Launch the Cloud Sync app and click on the + sign to select a public cloud service of choice (for Box.com – select the Box icon) and click on Next to continue.
At this point you need to enter your Box credentials.Once you have logged in you will need to Grant Access to Box to enabled it Read and Write files and folders.
Click on Grant access to Box and then click on Agree as shown below.
It will take a few seconds to Authorise but once complete it will display the option to select a local sync folder.
You can select an existing Share/Folder or create a new one. Once created this will be the top level folder that will be used to Sync data between Box.com and the Synology. It will then give you the opportunity to select the folders in Box.com that you want to sync with and finalise by clicking on Next.
And that’s it. Notifications appear in the Synology notification Centre.
I was doing some testing and currently if you delete a file on the Synology it doesn’t pull it back from Box…. it would be great if they had the option to resync.
Recently in order to fix one problem a new problem was created where after a HTTP redirect was working successfully, for some reason it stopped working on the default domain. E.g. http://mydomain.com/OWA to https://mydomain.com/OWA
The HTTPS link was working successfully yet the redirect kept on displaying HTTP 401 Unauthorized Access is denied. I spent a while troubleshooting in the end I enabled FailRequestTrace and noticed the following error in the logs: –
Message=”Error on CKerberosAuthenticationModule processing.”, Context=”OnAuthenticateRequest”, ErrorCode=”The operation completed successfully.
This led me to investigate the Kerberos modules in IIS – so I realised that I must have enabled it on the default site – so I launched IIS Manager – Default Site – Selected Modules from the right hand pane. Found KerbAuth Module and removed it.
It started working again.
Note: If The KerbAuth.dll module had been loaded at the Default Web Site level this can cause OWA as well as the Exchange Management tools (EMC/EMS) not to work.
-KERBAUTH should only be registered in IIS under modules on the PowerShell Site (not at the Default Site, and not at the Server level)
-KERBAUTH should only be registered as NATIVE, not as Managed at the PowerShell Site in IIS
-KERBAUTH should only be registered directly at the PowerShell Site in IIS, not Inherited.
If the Kerbauth.dll is registered as a “Managed” module not a “Native” Module, do the following:
• Remove Kerbauth from the Powershell web site as a Managed Module
• Verify if Kerbauth.dll is in the C:/Program Files/Microsoft/Exchange/V14/BIN directory.
• In IIS go to the server level and register Kerbauth.dll using the name “Kerbauth” and the path to C:/Program Files/Microsoft/Exchange/V14/BIN/KERBAUTH.DLL
• Go back to the Server level in IIS and Remove Kerbauth.
Note: We are simply removing it from the server level, and since it is registered now, it should be available at lower levels.
• Under IIS Powershell in MODULES select Manage Native Modules, and check by Kerbauth which now should appear.
• Ran IISRESET from a Command Prompt
Sometimes the simplest of things can be time consuming – and manufacturers just don’t make it easy. I hadn’t used a Fortigate firewall before so wasn’t familiar with the functions and had to make a simple change – assigning the same IP address to a device. Trawling through the instructions just wasn’t easy. Anyway rant over and here’s how you do it – just in case you have to one day.
- Login to Firewall via web dashboard (optionally you can connect via SSH)
Click on Dashboard option on left hand side of the navigation pane and if you hover over the CLI Console menu bar it gives you the option to detach. Select Detach to go full screen

- Enter the following command Config System DHCP Reserved-Address and press enter, prompt will change and will have (reserved-address) in parenthesis.
- The name of the new reservation item needs to be entered: Type in Edit “name of device” and press enter – note you need the quotation mark
- Now you need to assign the IP and MAC address using the command Set ip 192.168.x.x – press enter. x is the last two octets – Set mac 00:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX – press enter
- Type in the command next and then end
- Confirm the setting by typing in the command Show : – you should see a response with the new settings
- Reserved addresses must belong to an address in the DHCP IP address pool range
- There is no indication on the web GUI that an address is reserved. This has to be done via the CLI.
- If it is Windows device then ensure that you renew the IP lease on the device (in Command Prompt – ipconfig /renew all or ipconfig /renew eth*
